Luther Senior Carlin Awarded Fulbright-Hays Scholarship

2012 Jan 18

Luther College senior Paul Carlin has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Hays scholarship from the United States Department of Education to study in Russia.

Carlin, the son of Daniel and Mary Eileen Carlin from Lawler, Iowa, is a Russian studies and political science major at Luther. He is a 1996 graduate of New Hampton High School.

Carlin will spend the Spring 2012 semester in Vladimir as part of the ACTR program.

The Fulbright-Hays programs, enacted in 1961 as part of the Mutual Education and Cultural Exchange Act, were created to ensure scholars would receive the critical overseas education experiences necessary for developing high levels of language and area expertise.

Fulbright-Hays programs specifically support the strengthening of area and foreign language expertise in current and prospective U.S. educators. They do so by providing advanced overseas study and research opportunities and by offering experiences that enable educators to strengthen their international teaching.

While participating in the Fulbright-Hays program, students serve as informal cultural ambassadors by exchanging knowledge and culture during their time overseas.

Upon return to the United States, the impact of the programs multiply as participant experiences translate into curricular, outreach and research initiatives, creating globally aware citizens across the country.
